Ol’E Country Boy

Ol’E Country Boy

I’m an old fashion country boy,

Grew up with movies of Hop-a-Long, Gene and Roy.

I like an old cowboy ballad,

I like them greens called “Polk Salad.”

I like my cook’n Southern Style,

Also like Tex-Mex, once in awhile.

I like my coffee in an old tin cup,

I like driving an old cow-dented pick-up.

I like my  hat and boots,

I like a gun that still shoots!

I like my iced tea real sweet,

I like the feel of a starched sheet.

I like to hear old fashion preaching from God’s Word,

I like the sound of a mocking bird.

I don’t like the Government telling me how to live,

I don’t like people who’s always on the take and never want to give.

Being “Old Fashion” will leave you behind, it is said,

I think in most ways, you are way ahead!

Antique Boots

By Clark Crouch

It was just some cowboy boots,
not much as antiques go,
but they was right there on sale
at the mall’s antique show.

They was badly scarred and worn…
the price was very low…
and they was toward the back
sorta hidden, you know.

It made you sorta wonder
just where they’d been and all…
just where they’d trod and wandered
that brought them to that stall.

If only them boots could talk
about life on the range
it’d be fascinating
and maybe somewhat strange.

But answers are locked away
we’ll never hear the tale
of how them boots came to be
there in an antique sale.

Anyhow, I bought them boots
and took them home with me
as a tribute to the days
of when the west was free.

They now sit upon the hearth
on permanent display
given a place of honor
and pondered on each day.

I became involved in antiques when I was furnishing my first apartment. My sister started my interest in antiques. She would take me to barn auctions in Pennsylvania where I grew up, and she always had a house full of antiques, she even had a shop of her own at one time. I have been furnishing with and collecting antiques ever since. The quality is always there and the prices are usually better than with newer pieces. You can really get a custom decor with antiques. I especially find it satisfying to find a piece that might otherwise be discarded and turn it into a treasure with a little tender loving care (usually paint and a little work). Some (but not all) of my other interests in the past have been making stained-glass pieces, handcrafted silver jewelry, and decoupage.

My most beloved treasures in the world are my two daughters Shelby and Ashley who both will be in college next year (time flys)!!! my husband Jay, my two dogs, Izzy (a Yorkie), Peaches (a wolf-looking dog), Tibby my outside cat, and Zoey my inside cat.

There really are so many nice old and collectible pieces in the area. Living in a rural area, we drive so far for everything it is especially nice to have a business like Angel Kisses so close to home.

Small town living is often an ideal that others seek.  And sometimes the road twists and turns unexpectedly and brings us to a place where, by happenstance, has come full circle. I’m a city girl, or at least I was. You might call me an outsider, a foreigner to town… I can hear your thoughts, hisses and boos.  Before you tar n’ feather me, hear me out. I’ve moved here because I was laid-off, put out to pasture by a corporate giant who down-sized to fit back into its “too big for it’s pants”.

I’m not too big for my britches, never have been. Raised in a small farming town in Georgia where I participated in parades, FHA, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Girls Auxillary and other groups. My claim to fame was being #1 singles tennis player for 4 straight years in high school. Oh yes, and Key Club sweetheart. My Mom was a nurse and my Dad ran the Sherwin Williams paint store. I taught myself to swim at the local pool where I was taunted unmercifully by my older twin brothers.  I grew up and moved away, but here I am a small-town girl again, here in Lexington.

I have already grown to like it here, I’ve made a handful of friends, attend church and local festivities. I love wearing my flip-flops and pantaloons and wearing make-up just when I feel like it.  I enjoy my tea SWEET, my steak medium-rare and cannot wait for oysters (raw) to be back in season.  I eat venison sausage, I two-step, I bleach my hair (L’Oreal 9B), My talents are writing, decorating and re-purposing gently used items.  I enjoy auctions on the weekends and Warrenton in the fall & spring. My jean size keeps changing, but I promise it’s because they’re making ‘em smaller nowadays.

I love my daughters – Kristen & Sarah – grown and almost grown, Ole Miss 2014. And my grandkids, William and Georgia Claire, rock my world!  I enjoy college football. I’m a Christian conservative and I don’t care who objects! I vote straight Republican (oops, my Dad always said voting was private matter).  I pray every day for good to win out over evil and I love America. I’ll give you my opinion and advice when sought with southern-inspired good manners.

My booth at Angel Kisses Antiques on the historic, downtown Lexington Square, is called PittyPat’s Porch (from Aunt PittyPat in Gone With The Wind).  I want my neighbors to know that spending a few dollars in Lexington will ultimately benefit the whole community — so come see what we have that you can’t live without.  Remember, all things come full circle, eventually. Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

XOXO,

Maribeth Harvey

Autum

When the trees their summer splendor
Change to raiment red and gold,
When the summer moon turns mellow,
And the nights are getting cold;
When the squirrels hide their acorns,
And the woodchucks disappear;
Then we know that it is autumn,
Loveliest season of the year.

Peanuts and Popcorn

Peanuts and Popcorn

Happy November World! Brought our little Peanut to the shop today! Larry’s been on me to take Duke-ster Dale (aka Peanut) to the store and make him a “shop dog”. Sooooo, I bowed to his wishes and brought the little rat dog (he’s a rat terrier) to town. HE IS ECSTATIC! First, he loves to be with Mommy (that’s me, of course) and second, he loves to explore new smells and things. Well, there’s plenty of both here!

The first thing we did was to walk down to the Fourth Street Bakery and visit Kimberly and Regina, while we picked up our breakfast – a sausage and cheddar pinwheel – YUM! – and some coffee (the coffee is for me, not Duke-ster). We sat out on the porch and shared the pinwheel and enjoyed the crisp morning air. That’s when Gavin and his little rat terrier/chihuahua entered the Square for their every-morning ritual.

ZAP!

Suddenly, Duke-ster has a girlfriend!

The “kids” visited for a little while before “the adults” put an end to their sniffing and tail-wagging so that Gavin could get their breakfast at the bakery and Cindy and Dukey could drag all kinds of goodies out onto the porch in order to entice our clientele to “enter here”.

No sooner had we decorated the porch when our first customers arrived – a couple of “old school friends” reunited in Austin and exploring the lovely downtown area of Lexington. (Yes, they found us because they came to town to eat at Snow’s…. barbecue, that is. Thanks, Kerry!)

Nice conversation, and their expedition continued with their next stop – Fourth Street Bakery (dah!).

Come see us today! It’s time to put your CHRISTMAS THINKING CAP on! Let’s see how we can help!

It’s All In A Name

It’s All In A Name

Angel Kisses Antiques may have been a dream and an idea I’ve had for many years, but it actually “happened” pretty much overnight! It was around the 1st of April, 2011 and the tenant occupying the old Post Office Building in downtown Lexington, Texas put in their notice to Rita Owen, the owner of the building. They said they’d be out by April 15.

Since Rita and I are good friends, I worried about her building standing empty for months on end, as had been the case in the past. The economic condition of the world was not pretty, and there certainly wasn’t a lot of indication that Lexington was fixing to enjoy a boost to its local economy by way of new (or old) business moving to the Square in our lovely little town.

She and I had visited with Lana at Antique Queens in Rockdale a number of times over the years, asking about starting an antique mall in Lexington and Lana’s advice was always the same, “Be prepared to work hard. It won’t be easy.”

By April 15, the tenant did move out, and the building was suddenly empty. Talking with Rita about seeing if we could open up an antique mall before Homecoming (April 30, 2011) became the priority of our daily discussions. We put a couple of ads in the Lexington Leader, saying “Vendors Wanted” and the phones began to ring immediately! Wow! We figured we just might be able to pull it off.

We did some quick spiffing up of the interior of the building. I ordered a couple of vinyl signs that would alert the public to what was going on in the old building and six vendors were secured, as well as some consignment pieces. The building filled up fast.

Suddenly, I needed to name the store! While it wasn’t necessarily hard to name it – there wasn’t time for anything hard – I wanted the name to say things about the people involved and about the items featured in our store.  So, Angel Kisses Antiques was born. I had owned a small craft business years before in Houston that was named Angel Kisses because our main product was hand-made paper angels. The name originated from “kisses” my husband, Larry, used to give our “apple dumpling, sugar pie-plum, angel-baby girl”. He would brush his eyelashes on her little cheek and called it “Angel Kisses”! Nuff said. Name born!

Soooooo,  on Friday, April 29, we unofficially opened our doors! The next day, Saturday, April 30, we officially opened and the town came downtown in huge numbers for the annual Homecoming festival and our little store was full of new and wonderful customers!!!

Now you know. Thanks for being there! Come in again. We love our customers!!
